Philosophy
I have a special unique blend of musical experience to offer students as they seek to develop their God-given talents. I take them step by step through a proven method book series, and contour the teaching to the student, slower if needed, or faster according to their learning speed. If the student is advancing appropriately so that he/she would like to also learn improvisation or playing by ear, these can be added to the lesson plan. It would be an honor and privilege for me to help any student of music realize the valuable returns on their investment of time and practice. As a piano instructor, I endeavor to incorporate patience, persistence and praise in my teaching. Thank you for the opportunity.
In-Person and Virtual Lessons
I offer both in-person and virtual lessons to accommodate those who may live close to my piano studio in Idaho, as well as those who may live in different parts of the country. For virtual lessons, I use FaceTime, Zoom, and WhatsApp. If you are not able to use any of these platforms, please let me know and I will do what I can to be flexible.
Lesson Materials
I will let parents know what materials to order on Amazon after the student's appropriate technique level is ascertained. If needed, I can sell any music books I may have on hand to the parents/students for those in person.
Practice
It is important to practice a minimum of five times per week to master the concepts presented at the lesson and continue with your progress. Not enough practice time does not mean you should skip a lesson. In addition to practicing between lessons, a significant portion of achieving musical success is simply consistent lesson attendance - this helps to promote progress in the right direction. Also essential to ear training is a properly tuned and maintained acoustic piano with functioning keys and pedal.
Parental Involvement
Parental involvement is essential in prioritizing and completing assigned materials. When available, parents are encouraged to be a part of the lesson. This helps with parental guidance during the week and assists the student to be more confident and prepared for the next lesson. Please be consistent in bringing all piano books to the assigned lesson.
Scheduling
Lessons are usually once a week, either for a half hour or an hour. These are not set in stone, but rather a general expectation. Lesson time slots can be scheduled according to what fits best for both teacher and student's family taking into account school attendance, family/extra curricular activities, etc. If there are absences that occur (sickness, unexpected emergency, etc.), please let me know as soon as possible. For planned absences, vacations, etc., as far as possible, let me know at the beginning of the month so I can work it into that month's schedule without having to try to fit in a makeup lesson that week. If no makeup is given regardless of the reason, I will give a lesson credit for the next month. If you wish to terminate lessons, please give one month notice.
Payments
Lessons are $25 per half hour or $50 per hour. I request payment for the month's lessons at the first lesson of the month. I will send out a text to the parents to let them know what the payment will be for that month based on any planned absences, etc.
I accept cash, personal check, or Zelle, for in-person lessons, and Zelle for virtual lessons. If you have any questions about this policy, please feel free to contact me.
Finally... Remember the bigger picture:
• You get back what you put in.
• Lessons are a wise investment and can add to your health and longevity.
• Have FUN learning and share the musical blessings!!!
